Historical hints:
One of the main streets linking Marina Grande to the town, is made
up big stones in medieval style. The access is characterized by a
suggestive arch portal called “ Porta Marina Grande” For many centuries
it was the only way in to the city by sea. Passing through it the
Turkish invaded and sacked the town in 1558.
After that, Sorrento was protected by strong walls all around and
the portal was restored and made part of them. The town is a pretty
fishermen village located in a characteristic bay in Sorrento. The
protector of Marina Grande and of the fishermen is S.Anna, that is
celebrated on July 26th with a procession by sea ( the boats take
the statue of the saint all around the coast) and magnificent fireworks.
